I am trying to work with him, helping him to define the problem, and cut it
into chunks of managable size. I have pointed him to some example LCD code,
and if he can get that working, then he'll have part of the job done, and a
useful debugging output.

He has a month to get this running. IMHO, it will be a learning experience.
