In 1 instruction you can make two memory reads, multiply the result and add to the w register in 56 bit and then still update indirect addressing pointers. That can be more than 100 million of the above in a second. You try and do an 8 bit version of the above in a 20 MHz pic and you would not even manage a tenth of that performance. A dsp is a number cruncher PERIOD.
