Which pin number are you using? Make sure it is the OUT pin (pin 15). If worst comes to worst, you might have to plan to use a JFET buffer first (yikes!). Scope it to see what happens when you hookup the 7S04. Maybe even try a series resistor between the PIC and the 7S04. I have heard of this being done successfully, but have not done so myself. And while I have played with the 7S series of parts, I have not characterized the input capacitance.
