That is the course available in the USA and it POTENTIALLY works well.
You have 1 year from date of first disclosure to file patent.
As long as you can prove priority your patent claim is taken from date of
g\first disclosure when assessing priority. If you don't file a patent claim
within 1 year then the disclosed material becomes public domain.

Other countries, mine included, do not allow such prior disclosure. here,
disclosure without patent claim makes the material immediately public
domain. I prefer the US system.
