I think from the moment they switched from using tagstrips (remember those?) to printed circuits some clever boffing knew you could make a spiral inductor on the PCB. I have seen these spiral pcb inductors on B/W valve tv tuners, in TV that used tagstrips for all the other circuitry, in other words the pcb inductors were some of the FIRST circuit boards ever commercially made!
