Comments of similar experiences and > solutions are welcome. Nearly impossible. The retention cover has to be pretty carefully aligned to maintain proper compression on the LCD's on-glass contacts. Even if you were able to hack up a module, I think you would find that it wouldn't be very reliable. I would recommend looking for a display manufactured with a backlight. How about Okaya's 8x2 at http://www.okaya.com/RC0802-A.html or perhaps Occular's at http://www.ocularlcd.com/ocular9.htm. Hantronix has a small form factor 8x2 at http://www.hantronix.com/dwnc.htm.
