Thanks to the many who responded with suggestions for a LED driver, I received many well thought out responses. Although some of these chips seem to be perfect, I'm leaning towards those who pointed out that if I'm going to use a 24 pin IC, I might as well go to 28 and just drive the LEDS directly from a larger PIC, using PWM for intensity control. I'm prototyping with an '877 I have on the bench, and I'll now start to dive into its USART, which I haven't had the opportunity to use yet.
