I just went to the computer store yesterday, and saw almost exactly what you are
after. It has a base station with a modem in it, and a card that implements a
wireless lan. The idea is to outfit each computer with this card, and they can
talk to each other and get internet access through the base station. It was
rather inexpensive, but I believe it was based on early wireless lan specs
(1-2Mb/s - which is more than adequate for small home networks and modem
access.) I've solved the problem by putting 10baseT to every room. Once I
start usig the laptop on the internet, I'm not likely to move. If I do move, I
simply suspend the laptop, disconnect the lan, and reconnect where I need to
be. About 5 minutes total time, which isn't too bad.

I'm returning some product later today at the store I mentioned, I'll see if I
can get the manufacturer's name, and more details.
