"marginal" hardware would have to be defined as "hardware for which only crappy Windows device drivers are available", which has nothing to do with the hardware and its reliability at all. I have had several bits of hardware (old system board, Trident TGUI9440 video cards, disk controllers, etc) that caused no end of problems with Windows but ran perfectly under any other OS (meaning DOS and Linux).
