Your time instability is not related to the rate of change between the =
two voltages? I would be looking at having a reasonable size cap across =
the clock chip, and a resistor in series with the diode from 5V, so the =
voltage does not rise instantaneously.

One last point, you mention going down to 2.4 volt, someone else gave =
parameters as going down to 2.5 volt. You are not falling off the bottom =
of the tested range are you? I do not know the device, or its low =
voltage rating.
