Both should exist with both C and assembler and should work in the same way. In fact they are interchangable when you respect the applicable C conventions in assembler. To add files to an archive check the manual pages of the archiver. It's often called 'ar' or something like that. Also check out the manual pages of 'make'. It usually has special features to compare the dates of files with those in an archive and to update the archive when needed.
