One of the things that are wonderful about PICs is the fully static cmos circuitry. Few people realize that you can have the PIC run with 50Hz clock using a RC oscillator and use almost as little power as if it was sleeping. Even at 32kHz with a cheap watch crystal the power drain is so low that the difference vs. sleeping is almost negligible. Depending on what you do this may be the answer to your problem(s). One of these days I'll try to build something useful around a PIC powered by 4 lemons with copper and zinc plates stuck in them for batteries ;-). Any ideas ?
