So its hardware redundancy to avoid a single point of failure because of
broken code, eh? (ie: excessive power consumption due to floating input).

But then if the pins are accidently TRISed as output you'll be drawing
unneeded power thru the R's.

I guess if I was paranoid about this I would do as one poster suggested:
shadow the TRIS regs and periodically refresh them.
