It didn't when I tried it a year ago. You're sort of hosed here. The only way to
upgrade your PICStart's firmware, you're going to MPLAB and a blank 17c42. Once
you get to a rev picp fully understands, you can of course do the upgrades
without mplab. BTW, Andrew Pines at one point briefly mentioned that he might
add support for the early versions. So you may want to see what his latest code
requires.
