The Art of Electronics is an excellent book. There are a few of the more advanced topics that don't get treated too well (I seem to remember that some of the rf stuff is glossed over a little), and the book is getting a little out of date now - the circuits often serve a lot better as explanations to design techniques (which is what they are intended for) than they would for actual practical use (what you couldn't do with a PIC you would probably be able to do with an FPGA).
