It's the crappy antenna on FRS radios that limit their range.
Thank you VERY much FCC.

The $80 US  Alinco (SP?) ham band or FRS S-41T can be
modified for a real antenna.  300mw ain't too bad with a real
antenna.

There are instructions for this on the web.  I use a modified
Alinco I bought on Ebay to talk to FRS radios all the time.
