Operation off a single battery cell is desirable. At a maximum 2 cells. The best candidate so far seems to be the Texas MSP430 family. (If you haven't heard of this look it up - an impressive wee beasty. 16 bit with versions with A2D, LCD drive and more.) Operation to 1.8V. Flash / OTP / mask versions available.
