Main reason s MAY be low power, visibility, response speed, appearance. All except response can be matched by rolling shutter displays which are available in a wide range of sizes. Trying to remember what formats these are available in. For alphanumeric I guess it would need to be star-burst. Also, I suspect that a smaller display height may be adequate. I imagine that you have modelled this - I just tried using felt marker and paper :-) and feel the 0.57" display may well suffice - my eyes are not too good and I could read 15 mm characters acceptably well at 5 metres. .
