National Semiconductor used to make the 8390 series of Ethernet chips in DIL
packages. These are used on NE2000 controllers. Later versions come in surface
mount versions, but the earlier ones were DIL. I do not know if the DIL ones are
still available.

Surface mount should not be a problem to solder. There have been a number of
references in this list to pages showing how to do it.
