There are a few ways, it depends how many pins you have free. If you will only be showing the numbers 0 through 9 then a good way of doing it is connect 4 pins to a binary to 7 segment display decoder, and connect one pin to the common anode (or cathode) of the display. From there you simply toggle each common anode (or cathode) pin one by one, each time outputting the number you want to display on that digit on the 4 pins. If you need to display things other than numbers as well then you will most likely need to use 7 pins, one for each segment.
