Check out Gary T. Desrosiers site at  http://www.embeddedethernet.com.  He
has posted quite a bit of software and hardware documentation to allow you
to ping (ICMP) and grok UDP packets over twisted pair with a BASIC Stamp or
a PIC.  He sells a nice and simple development platform for the CS8900,
integrated ethernet NIC.  I think you will be pleased at how easy it is to
bootstrap your ethernet node using Gary's development system and software.
