Adam's response is exactly right. I looked at the specs for the old 1489 line receiver as well as the MAS232. The worst case I found was the 1489 which still sees anything below 0.65V as a low. The MAX232 and its variants' input threshold is more like 1.4 - 1.8V. You just have to invert the data you send toand receive from the PC, since the line drivers/receivers invert data.
