Thanks to all who replied, Problem solved! Actually nothing wrong with the serial port after all that, it is just that I have been programming Flash micro's in circuit for so long I had forgotten about the 'special' serial cable I needed to make the programmer work!!! (insert sound of smacking oneself over the back of the head!)
