A pic can control a cheap digital camera by using a 4066 to make the contacts normally made by the camera's buttons. You can program the pic to take a picture or several in response to an event detected by a PIR or other sensor. This works well for automated wildlife photography. For activating the camera at 50m I'd suggest the RF remote control keyfobs sold widely for car alarm / security applications. Most of the reciever units have a simple logic output that can be connected directly to a pic. For video any 2.4GHz video transmitter would be able to cover 50m line of sight without a problem. Look for a unit that has a remote control extender. This means that as well as sending video back from the camera, the system can also send IR commands to the camera from the reciever end. This is useful because it could allow you to control the camera direction using an IR remote if you wanted to build that feature into your system.
