I have a battery powered hand held data acquisition device that uses a =
PIC 16F84 that sends small amounts of data serially to a RS232 via a =
Dallas 275 line driver. As the device is used many times a day I am =
experiencing plug and socket problems and I now feel I would like to =
make this data link infrared, However as the amount of data is very =
small (hundreds of bytes) and I will only need to transmit over a few =
centimeters I do not see the need to implement a full IRDA spec link.=20

Has anyone seen or had such an application running if so:

What hardware was used? (As there are many devices all with different =
specifications).

What battery life was obtained?

And

What sort of transmission speeds were achieved?

Any help or pointers would be most appreciated.
