I have used the SMC91C9X chips for embedded ethernet. These have 5K of
onboard RAM with built in page-based memory management. You can access this
RAM RANDOMLY from the host. With a little care, the ethernic can now also
serve as buffer space in which you can process the packets instead of just a
pipe that feeds the data to the host (ala the CS8900, the way I read it).
