If tri-color includes Red, Amberish, or Green, you could use something like Digikey's (p. 593, bottom right of the page) Rect. package Red/Green LED, White Lens, 100 degree viewing angle, 6.0mcd, P/N MV49124AQT-ND, $0.60/1, $0.57/10's, $0.52/100's. Pretty sure the diodes are back to back so pull low for one color, pull up for the other, OC = off, alternate pulling up & down for the 3rd color; use one series resistor and you're set.
