The Analog Devices ADXL202 or ADXL210 are ideal for this kind of thing... 2-axis accelerometer, digital PWM interface, $30 for an eval board you can stick right into your circuit... I'm interfaced a 16F84 to one, its dead easy. Four pins (and two are ground and power). They make fantastic tilt chips as well -- real time 2-axis tilt with 30mA of current (and you can shut down between readings as well).
