Along these lines, you might be interested in this: www.freesco.org Basically this is a very stripped down linux distro (fits on a 1.4 mb floppy) and runs on a 386 dx with 8 meg or better (no harddrive!), net card, modem. You can set this up as an ethernet router; dial in/out box, printer server, limited web server, etc. It's very easily set up via scripted menus.
