Grace Hopper comes to mind, a guru on the big iron of the 40's & 50's - Adm. Hopper, USN, actually. Originated the term "bug" for pgming glitches. In the early defense projects women were preferred as pgmrs, as they were considered better suited to the painstaking nature of the task...
