I'd recommend  WSC4C Version 2.4

WSC4C is a serial communications library which can be used with
Microsoft, Borland, and Watcom C/C++ compilers running under Windows
95/98, Windows NT, or Windows 3.1.

The tutorials that come with VC++ are good.  Used in conjunction with
the example files you can get a good grip of MFC basics.  Most of the
major classes are used in at least one example program.
