Stefan, Firstly get hold of MPLAB (microchips' free development tools section on their website www.microchip.com), which allows you to write assembly programs for PICs. Get hold of a programmer (buy one or build one of the numerour Tait-style programmers - schematics available on the web). That should allow you to start playing with the PIC16F84, which is flash programmable (don't need a UV eraser).
