But compiler manufacturers DO answer the phone when it rings, and sometimes the person on the other end of the line says something like, "Hi, [Walter/Clyde], this is [Andy/Scott/whomever]. Y'know, you can save an instruction in your 16-bit subtractions by...." When that happens, the next version of the C compiler generally includes those optimizations.
