If you're going to mark them, then stripes at a regular time interval could calibrate a cruise control. It would be pretty trivial to filter out vandals and road junk, but if you had the option to set a cruise and KNOW that it was legal, and not going to creep up or be ceeped up on, I think that would make for a more pleasant journey. This also keeps the low-tech stuff on the pavement, and the high tech in the car, where it's easy to maintain.
