Check out this month's New Scientist (Black Holes edition); there is an article
in there about using locusts eyes for vision detection. They test the responses
by showing them clips from battle sequences from Star Wars. Probably not quite
what you had in mind [ ;-) ] but distributed computing using very simple sensors
appears to be the "in vogue" way of implementing cheap vision systems.
