Philips make some nice little 8 pin chips that do something like this. Check out the TDA7052 for 1.2W mono, no shutdown pin but Iq about 4mA. They probably have something newer and better out now. Are you using a micro to produce the audio? - put some MOSFETs on it and make your own grunty little switching amplifier.
