I've had very little success trying to locate an "idiot proof" crystal based Rx/Tx pair for experimentation.

A few people have mentioned that I should be looking at 900MHz Rx/Tx pairs, apparently you can have a range of up to 1km with these.

Does anyone have some basic design URLs or resources they can point me to to try working this out? I'm trying to obtain a signal in, signal out pair. Cost is a little bit of an issue, and commonly available parts (in Australia) would be helpful.

Firsthand experience is really appreciated.
