Hi Andrew, I have a couple of pages for you to check out: http://www.hobbyrobot.com/info/gp2d02/index.html and http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/shb7/ranger.html The first is an appnote (rather long, but you can just skim it to get an idea) about a sensor from Sharp which uses IR to measure distance in exactly the range you mentioned (a few cm to about 1.5 meter) and sends out the data serially. The note shows how to interface it to a PIC and a BSII. The sensor costs about $30 and can be purchased from HobbyRobot.com Yeah, it is kinda expensive, but it does work reliably and it is quite small. The second is an ultrasonic ranger that I designed and built a couple of years ago. Mine worked out to about 2.5 meters. The design could be improved but I thought it might give you some ideas, especially if you are a do-it-yourselfer like myself.
