I am just about half way though building such a beast at the
moment, overlays EEG sample counts over video of an operation.

I agree that the data sheet is a bit vague, I have brought out the
frame sync from the STV5730A to the PIC int B0 in case I need
write during the blanking / flyback time.
I found the circuit in EA Oct99 "Video Title Generator" very useful
and am largely basing the design on it.
