Yes, I've recently used PICSTART with a 16F877 with no problem, using
2.01 firmware.
The IDE is much better though. I find really is much easier to develop a
project when you can debug/re-program cycle your prototype on-board.

I am interested in using a pic 16F87x device but I can't seem to find
ANY details anywhere about whether the picstart plus can program it or

I'd like to buy a picstart plus rather than a 3rd party programmer, and

or can't program 16F87x devices because if it can't, I'll just use EPROM
devices.  I need a chip with 2 A/D channels and I'd prefer to have them
on the chip rather than use the 16F8x with external A/D chips for
instance.  The less discreet components I have, the better.
