I too had that sort of question, back in July last year.  I compiled a
checklist and sought input from the PIClist community, and it was
greatly improved as a result.  It is attached.  It is specific to the
12C509 rather than 12C508, but it should help.

I found it very practical to prototype with the 16F84 and then move the
code to 12C509.  Seven out of eight projects worked fine.  Eleven months
ago, however, I stumbled badly and could not get my DS1820 interface
code to work.  I may be missing something in the checklist.

Perhaps I should HTMLise this checklist and place it on a web page?
