It's not all that bad... HOT IN is the black wire from the source (wall switch, outlet, etc), HOT OUT goes to what is being driven/dimmed (lamp). The HOT OUT is just the conditioned HOT IN. These are the electrician terms... you probably want to see 120VAC in [hot in], 0-120VAC out [hot out].
