  Haven't you seen "Flicker Flame" neons for mains use in pseudo-candle

  NEC makes them, called "plasma screen" colour displays.  No lasers, as
they would be even *more* expensive.  I'd love one but low cost they're
not, something like $16,000 in US currency.
