Capture/Compare captures and compares! In capture mode, on a selected trigger edge, the contents of the timer are captured to a capture register. You can use this to accurately time an external signal. Compare is an "alarm clock" function. You load the compare register with a number and the capture/compare logic generates an interrupt when the timer value is the same as the contents of the compare register.
