SURE! First off: We make specilized precision Welding equipment http://www.microjoin.com which are really special power supplies. That's (basically) what I did. Creating an arbitary waveform based on an interrupt driven state machine. I suppose you could use an internal ADC. But I used an external 14 bit Burr-Brown device with a 4 bit parallel interface. Using a PIC with lotsa I/O and running up around 30MHZ, you really need almost no glue. My update rate is 40us. Was shorter but since we control a machine there is more I/O to handle than just generating a waveform. You can write a waveform generator in easy enough. Just getting the state machine info into is the hard part.
