If I read you correctly, your VFD is "dot-matrix" type as oppose to "segmented" type ? In that case the NEC 16312 can't be used here as it is designed to drive segmented type VFD. Samsung makes VFD module that is pin to pin compatible with standard 44780 LCD modules, it even has built-in inverter so that you only need to supply it +5V. Check out, http://www.sdd.samsung.co.kr/ However, I have asked the price before, a 20x2 VFD module cost around US$30 compared to 20x2 LCD module of only around US$8. It does look neat though.
