For "Application Specific" read "DIY/Custom". Which roughly means specially designed at a level much closer to basic chip design than programming EPROM or PALs but above the level of designing from-scratch a merchant micro or other complex 'standard' part. Design not necessarily done by/at the chip factory. DIY for the hardy engineer, with deep pocket$. Typically used for production lot sizes and complexity between the two (above) extremes.
