It's the switchmode power supply. I'm not sure, but they are often supposed to synch with the scan circuits, and can lose synch or start "squegging" (the control circuit becomes unstable and pulses the ultra- sonic conversion at an audible frequency). It's a nuisance, not often fatal in my experience. It *may* be a crook capacitor in the control circuit, but it's your guess which one. It may also mean that some other component (transformer) is getting old and partially failing. SMPSUs are hairy things to diagnose. My daughter ordered me to swap a nice digital SVGA monitor back to an older "analogue" VGA one for her at college just because she couldn't tolerate the noise! -- Cheers, Paul B.
