I find that when an alkaline or NiCad pack leaks I can clean most of the mess up
 nicely with some
acidic water soluble electronic soldering flux. I just liberally apply the flux
then wash with
copious amounts of water. Last I blow dry with compressed air. It works wonders
on the battery
contacts in toys.
