After watching all of this discussion, I have come to a personal conclusion (as a neophyte, I admit) that the best solution appears to be to set all unused pins to output HIGH with 10k pull-up resistors. This apparently has the following benefits: 1. Defined state & non-floating. 2. No current flow (since at HIGH with pull-up). 3. Ready for future use on board. 4.
